About Chiropractic and Chiropractors

Chiropractic care has its origins in wellness and the optimization of good health. The objective of the chiropractor is to provide that first health care contact for a patient. Doctors of Chiropractic understand the value and responsibility of working in cooperation with other health care professionals, recognizing that collaboration serves their patients’ best interests. They are required to refer patients to the appropriate health care provider if a condition is detected that is not subject to appropriate management by chiropractic methods or techniques.

Licensed chiropractors are primary care providers focused on promoting a healthy lifestyle and preventative care. Chiropractors must have graduated from both an undergraduate program, as well as a four-year doctorate degree program that includes laboratory work in basic sciences, diagnosis, treatment procedures and a clinical internship. Annual postgraduate continuing education is also required.

The definition of chiropractic is a health care discipline that:
  • emphasizes the inherent recuperative power of the body to heal itself
  • promotes quick healing and decreases the need for analgesic and anti-inflammatory medications
  • focuses on the relationship between body structure and function
  • increases range of motion and decreases muscle spasms
  • ensures pain reduction and restores proper function
