About Sciatica
The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body: it starts low in the back and runs all the way down the leg to the feet. A person who suffers from sciatica will experience severe pain in the leg caused by compression, irritation, or inflammation of the sciatic nerve.
Common causes of sciatica include the following:
Misalignment of one or more of the lumbar vertebra
Vertebral disk bulging, also known as "slipped disc"
Spinal degeneration or decay
Gluteal muscle spasm of the piriformis muscle
How Dr. Le Cara Can Help
Dr. Le Cara will ask about your symptoms and medical history and then conduct a physical examination to find the source of nerve irritation and relieve the pressure causing the pain. By correcting the source of the problem, the body can heal naturally without nerve interference. Sciatica often responds dramatically to the restoration of normal spinal function through chiropractic care. Dr. Le Caras recommendations for treatment may include the following:
Spinal adjustments to move the related vertebra back to a more normal position
Massage therapy
Physiotherapy
Transcutaneous Electrical Neuromuscular Stimulation (TENS) unit for home use
